Hello,
It’s been a while since we last contacted you! Here’s an update and an explanation of what’s been going on.
The background
The brief history of how we got to this point is as follows:
In January we had a public meeting discussing the possibility of a community purchase of Goit Stock Wood
In March Bradford Council also approved Goit Stock Wood as an Asset of Community Value, giving us 6 months to raise funds to buy the wood
In April we sent off our application to register a charity, Friends of Goit Stock Wood
In late June, the Charity Commission approved our charity registration and we started fundraising in earnest.
Over the summer, loads of you helped support us with donations and fundraising!
How did we do?
By our deadline at the end of September, we’d raised approximately £35,000 of donations, pledges and Gift Aid. While this was a great achievement, it was a long way from the £195,000 asking price of the wood.
What’s happened since then?
We have spent the last few weeks looking at whether there were any other possibilities that would allow us to purchase the wood. This has included looking for grants we could apply for. We got close to applying for a large grant from the National Lottery, but unfortunately as we got into the details we determined that we wouldn’t be eligible for it.
We have now reached the decision that we have exhausted all the options and therefore we will not be able to purchase Goit Stock Wood.
What happens now?
We would still like to explore options for supporting Goit Stock Wood without actually owning it - similar to other “Friends of” groups in the local area. We know that this will depend partly on what happens to the wood and, if it is eventually sold, on the support of the new owners. We would be interested to hear any ideas you might have about projects that we could support in the wood - you can email your suggestions to contact@goitstock.org.uk - but we would also like to invite you to join us at the pub to share and discuss your thoughts :
